LAKE TAHOE PICTURES II

These last three pictures are from the morning we were at the beach...

The five girls (left to right): Steve's wife Erin, Matt's wife Heather, myself, Dave's wife Jeanette, and my sister Anne. Years ago, at a family reunion on my mom's side of the family, we had gotten a picture of all of us except for Erin (I was newly engaged and Steve was still in high school) sitting on the beach. Even though the five of us girlies have been together many times, it wasn't until Tahoe that we finally got it together and took a new picture.

Hudson and a few of his cousins (Emma, Thomas, and Abby) playing in the sand. Thankfully, it was the coarse sand that I mentioned in a previous post and cleaned off easily.

Claire hanging out on the play structure at the beach...she was happy to run back and forth on the bridges, climb the steps, and take the occasional trip down one of the slides.

Next up: details and pictures from our extended vacation.

LAKE TAHOE PICTURES I

Here's batch one of pictures from our Tahoe trip.

The whole clan: my parents, their 5 kids and their spouses, and 14 grandkids and one more on the way (not an announcement on my part...one of my sisters in law is expecting).

My amazing parents!

While there, my sister, mom, and two of my sisters in law and I all surprised my expectant sister in law with a little baby shower. Just prior to our trip, she'd had an ultrasound and found out that the baby is a girl. We (Grandma, 5 aunts, and the 4 nieces aged 6 and up) all had a yummy breakfast and she opened lots of pink presents.

Hudson and his cousin, Tyler, hanging out in our bedroom (watching Sponge Bob or some other quality cartoon).

My little swimmers getting ready for a dip in the pool and hot tub one evening. As stated in my previous posts about Tahoe, swimming was at the top of our list of things to do there.

More pictures to follow...

FUTURE PRO PHOTOGRAPHER?

We extended our vacation after Lake Tahoe by about a week and a half (more on that later)...we just got home Monday evening/night. I spent all of Tuesday and much of today updating our bank accounts, grocery shopping, laundry, paying bills, etc. Such crazy fun. Anyway, this afternoon, I finally got my act together a bit more and actually uploaded all of the photos from our trip (and just before) onto my computer. Amongst said pictures I found the following:

What is that glorious glow on the right, you ask? That is something that all of us pigmentally challenged folk in my family give off when exposed to any kind of light (except my little bro...still wondering where he came from). Gonna be around us in our swimsuits? Get out your strongest sunglasses.

Then there was this one. Meet Frank and Indiana Jones. I can't recall which fish is which...I think that Frank is the solid orange one and Indy is white and orange. But don't quote me on that. If I'm wrong and Hudson finds out, I'm in some serious trouble.

Lastly there was this fab self portrait. Only two things to say:
  1. If you doubted as to who took the pictures after looking at the first shot, no more questioning necessary.
  2. Love the lips.
Pictures from Tahoe to come soon...
P.S. Went to Target tonight and by chance walked down an aisle with little digital cameras for kids. Got the last Disney one with a Cars theme (only 20 smackers...rock on!). No more using our cameras for this little photog!

LAKE TAHOE: PART II

The remainder of our time in South Lake Tahoe proved to be rather laid back. Both Claire and I ended up getting the fever/bug that Hudson had come down with at the beginning of our trip, so that definitely held us back a bit. Thankfully the fever only lasted about 1 to 1 1/2 days for each of us so it was relatively short-lived.

We did venture out to Virginia City one day. It's an old mining town with a plethora of tourist-trap shops and candy stores. We did go on a little mine tour in town and took the big open-car train ride in the hills. In spite of the billions of stores, we only made a few minor purchases. The kids each got a little bit of candy and Hudson ended up using his $10 from Grandpa to buy a fossilized sand dollar and a pretty blue stone of some sort from The Rock Shop.

The only other real outing that we ended up going on was a brief trip to a local beach. Guests at our Marriott are given free passes to get in so we took advantage and all of us mommies (and Grandma), Max, my brother Dave, and all of the kiddies headed down there mid-morning on Thursday. Being so used to the sand at the ocean (aka "the real beach"), I was shocked at how coarse the sand was at Tahoe and found that it actually hurt my feet a bit. Claire didn't like it, either...after a single moment of standing on it, she refused to touch it again the entire time we were there. Thank heavens for the big play structure that she was able to run and climb on.

As I said before, other than our little outings, the rest of the week remained pretty mellow. When we were in good enough shape, we put the pool and "coolest" hot tub to very, very good use. Claire absolutely loved the "wall-ah" and Hudson was a good sport, going back and forth between the cooler pool (if you call 85 degrees cool) and the hot tub with his crazy mommy. Oh - and another miracle occurred on our trip (the first being my time behind the wheel on the drive out)...Max actually got in the pool with us. Unlike my guppy children and myself, he's never been a huge fan of going swimming, especially in public (too crowded & all...can you blame him?). It was so much fun to be out there together as a family and I know that both our kids and some of the cousins who also swam with him were thrilled to have him there.

Since we were to check out Friday morning, we spent much of Thursday afternoon doing laundry, packing, checking under furniture for Legos, doing more laundry, etc. I always hate feeling like such a chunk of my vacation time is taken up by packing up at the end but it's a necessary evil.

In this process, I learned a very valuable secret: If you ever stay on the third floor of the Alpine building at Marriott's Timber Lodge in South Lake Tahoe, you cannot rely on the washer on the right to start when you push the button or the dryer on the right to...wait for it...actually dry your clothes. While we did have our own washer and dryer in our condo, we decided to take advantage of the guest laundry room just down the hall. I set both washers to do their job and when I went back an hour later to transfer the clothes to the dryers, I discovered that the aforementioned washer on the right had never started and wouldn't start no matter how many freaking buttons I pushed. I had to shut the thing down, power it back up, and re-set the whole cycle before it'd do what it was supposed to. So, while that washer was running, I threw the other clothes into one of the dryers, turned it on, and headed back over to our place. Another hour went by and I ran over to change the 2nd load over to the dryer. I then discovered that the first load that I had put in the dryer was warm but still almost as damp as when I had put it in there. So I tossed the second load into the same dryer with the first, set it to a higher heat setting and longer duration and once again left. When I came back from dinner over an hour later, all of the clothes were still totally wet. Warm, but wet. I think they would have been drier had I laid them all out over the dining chairs in our condo. I ended up taking all of the clothes back to our place where our very reliable in-house dryer did the job the right way in less than 45 minutes. If I had just done those two loads in our condo the first time around, all of our laundry would have been done and folded prior to our going out to dinner. Note to self: don't ever buy front-loading washer and dryer by GE.

We were up plenty early on Friday and should have been packed, showered, and ready to go by checkout time at 10:00 a.m. Not so...it was a rough morning with Hudson acting out and Claire constantly fussing and crying. Not exactly ideal conditions when trying to get things done. We finally made it out the door by about 10:30 or so and instead of heading for home, we followed my sister and her kids down the mountain in the opposite direction...

LAKE TAHOE: PART I

As I write this, I'm relaxing in a very loud but comfy leather chair in our very nice, very comfy, very perfect condo in South Lake Tahoe (thanks, Dad and Mom!). We're here for a family vacation/reunion with my 4 sibs and their kiddies. Together with my parental units, we make up a ridiculously awesome group of 28 people.

We got here last Friday in the late afternoon. But not before a most lovely long drive across the rather unlovely desert. A short while after leaving home (no more than 30 minutes), Hudson called out from the back seat: "Mom, are we actually in Africa?" I answered in the negative and considered the fact that driving through parts of Africa would have been far more scenic and interesting than the vast expanse of dirt, sand, and sagebrush that we were watching whiz by our windows. We were treated to a few rain, lightning, and thunder storms along the way. And this left us pitying the motorcyclists who sat under overpasses waiting for the pelting rain and hail to move on. But while they looked miserable, we thoroughly enjoyed the chaotic weather from the safety of my most beloved Expedition. Another highlight of the drive: for the first time ever, Max actually let me drive a leg of the trip. We have made a number of long drives in our 10.75 years of marriage and he has never allowed me behind the wheel. Not on "quick" 4 hour drives, not on our longer 13 hour drives. Friday was the first time ever. And let me tell you, it was a glorious thing. Those two hours behind the wheel were totally refreshing, rejuvenating, and completely life changing. And they flew by like I didn't know time could fly on long drives.

Since we got here, things have been pretty laid back but not always by choice. Hudson had a fever for the first couple of days and as he got over that, I came down with a loverly smoker's lung cough. Then both kids managed to pick that up from me with Hudson having it worse than Claire. He woke up from a nap today due to coughing too hard and proceeded to lose his lunch. Ah, the glories of Acid Reflux. Poor kid.

It hasn't been all fevers, coughing, and cookie tossing, though. While it was somewhat chilly for the first couple of days and the weather has just improved yesterday and today, we've had family dinners, gone swimming in the wondrously warm pool and sat in the not-too-hot hot tub, discovered that there is absolutely no good shopping in Tahoe, and gone to the grocery store about 228 times (Raley's is a very short walk away from where we're staying and I have a knack for forgetting things). We have plans to visit Emerald Bay, possibly rent a boat to go out on the lake for a half day, and take a trip to Virginia City. But even if none of that happens and we just hang around here, it's nice to be away together and to take a break from "real life".

More Tahoe to come...

JUST WHAT I NEEDED ON A BUSY DAY...

Today has to be a productive day (and yet here I am blogging)...we're leaving on vacation in the morning. Not only do I need to finish packing, I have a house to spruce up, errands to run (hard when my car is down the hill getting a bit of work done before we leave), laundry to do, and two kids to keep in line in the process.

A little bit ago, I was upstairs getting a few billion things done. I heard Claire calling me from downstairs saying, "Hand. Ow. Hand. Hand. Owwwwieee!" She wasn't crying, just fussing as she worked her way up to see me. Every few steps, she'd stop, open her fisted hand and once again say, "Hand. Ow." She finally got to me at the top of the stairs and when I asked her to show me her hand, she gladly opened it to expose her "ow". There is was...a lovely smear and several spots of poop. I appreciated her efforts to keep it from spreading (especially considering that she was successful in this) as well as the fact that she kept it to one hand. I was able to clean it up with a baby wipe or two and a good hand washing. Unlike last time...

A few weeks ago, I was getting dinner made when she called me from a stool across the kitchen. She was, as she did today, calling, "Hand. Ow! Hand...owwieee!" and so forth. However, it was her first experience fiddling with her own poop (or any feces for that matter) and she had managed to not only spread it on her hands, but on her arms, nose and forehead. Oh - and she was slick enough to stick one of her filthied thumbs in her mouth, too. Sufficed to say, cleaning that mess up took a lot more than a couple of baby wipes.

I am SO looking forward to the day she is potty trained.
