LAKE TAHOE: PART I

As I write this, I'm relaxing in a very loud but comfy leather chair in our very nice, very comfy, very perfect condo in South Lake Tahoe (thanks, Dad and Mom!). We're here for a family vacation/reunion with my 4 sibs and their kiddies. Together with my parental units, we make up a ridiculously awesome group of 28 people.

We got here last Friday in the late afternoon. But not before a most lovely long drive across the rather unlovely desert. A short while after leaving home (no more than 30 minutes), Hudson called out from the back seat: "Mom, are we actually in Africa?" I answered in the negative and considered the fact that driving through parts of Africa would have been far more scenic and interesting than the vast expanse of dirt, sand, and sagebrush that we were watching whiz by our windows. We were treated to a few rain, lightning, and thunder storms along the way. And this left us pitying the motorcyclists who sat under overpasses waiting for the pelting rain and hail to move on. But while they looked miserable, we thoroughly enjoyed the chaotic weather from the safety of my most beloved Expedition. Another highlight of the drive: for the first time ever, Max actually let me drive a leg of the trip. We have made a number of long drives in our 10.75 years of marriage and he has never allowed me behind the wheel. Not on "quick" 4 hour drives, not on our longer 13 hour drives. Friday was the first time ever. And let me tell you, it was a glorious thing. Those two hours behind the wheel were totally refreshing, rejuvenating, and completely life changing. And they flew by like I didn't know time could fly on long drives.

Since we got here, things have been pretty laid back but not always by choice. Hudson had a fever for the first couple of days and as he got over that, I came down with a loverly smoker's lung cough. Then both kids managed to pick that up from me with Hudson having it worse than Claire. He woke up from a nap today due to coughing too hard and proceeded to lose his lunch. Ah, the glories of Acid Reflux. Poor kid.

It hasn't been all fevers, coughing, and cookie tossing, though. While it was somewhat chilly for the first couple of days and the weather has just improved yesterday and today, we've had family dinners, gone swimming in the wondrously warm pool and sat in the not-too-hot hot tub, discovered that there is absolutely no good shopping in Tahoe, and gone to the grocery store about 228 times (Raley's is a very short walk away from where we're staying and I have a knack for forgetting things). We have plans to visit Emerald Bay, possibly rent a boat to go out on the lake for a half day, and take a trip to Virginia City. But even if none of that happens and we just hang around here, it's nice to be away together and to take a break from "real life".

More Tahoe to come...

So sorry to hear you were sick in Tahoe! Since you extended your stay we were likely there at the same time, no? 'Cept we were Northshore, and you were south.
